Islamic innovations represent a major stream of misinformation about early Islam and the Islamic sources. They consist of folk traditions, novelties introduced by later Islamic scholars, and outright modern propaganda that no informed Muslim ever believed before the 20th or 21st century.
Ironically, Islamic innovations go hand-in-hand with Muhammad mythicism. Because the innovations are either very easy to debunk or useful to their own peculiar theories, Muhammad mythicists set these up as representing the actual teachings of Islam. Muslim mythicists run defense for the Qur’an saying that Mary was one of three gods that made up the Christian Trinity. Why? Because if the Qur’an really teaches this, it must come for a deeply ignorant environment, and they want the Qur’an to be an intelligent book made by educated people. Muslim mythicists run defense against the Islamic dilemma, pretending that the Qur’an does not clearly say that the Torah is a guidance and Christians should judge by the Gospel they have with them, and that both Jews and Christians can verify from their Scripture that Muhammad is a true prophet whom they specifically expected.
Thus, it is important to knock down the Islamic innovations that Muhammad mythicists routinely borrow and bolster to know with clarity what Muhammad actually taught. Muslims must be forced to grapple with the actual historical teachings of their prophet and religion and not allowed to retreat into new ad hoc revisions every time they encounter a difficulty
